Dalkeith is a fine example of a NSW colonial home, gardens and outbuildings. Lived in and maintained by one family since the 1850's until 2021, Dalkeith retains the atmosphere and romance one expects of an historic property. It has been recently modernized with a light touch, sensitive to the property's intrinsic heritage values. French doors to the front verandah are in the 1830's style, suggesting that the buildings origins may date to the 1830's.
The stable was once part of the Cobb and Co network of" staging posts". It is built of local stone and retains the original cobbled floor and feed trough, carved from a single log. The stable building also contains "the men's room" (with original fireplace, wash trough, copper and floorboards), the carriage house, cellar and hay loft.
The home consists of two wings, arranged in an L shape, with a courtyard. A wide verandah runs around all sides of the house. Most rooms open directly onto the verandah. This energy efficient design was brought from India in the early 1800's and is still a very efficient way of managing temperature.
The original Neurea Store and Post Office is contained within the northern end of the house and is still in original condition, with remnants of vibrant 1850's wallpaper, cedar shelves and counter. It was once the hub of the Neurea community.
