For a moment, imagine Mount Evelyn in post-war Australia. Orchards still shaped the hillsides, evenings unfolded around the radiogram, and homes were built with timber, plasterwork and craftsmanship intended to last. Over the decades came dinner parties, fondue sets, television nooks and all the rituals of mid-century family life. Remarkably, this one-owner former orchard homestead has carried that history forward with extraordinary authenticity.
Set on approximately 1,704m², the cream-brick home enjoys a spectacular north-facing outlook across lush pasture to the mountains beyond. The land in front can never be built on, so the view remains wonderfully open and rural, with ponies sometimes wandering to the fence. It is country calm without the acreage upkeep.
Inside, the house sits at a fascinating intersection of eras, with Art Deco-inspired flourishes, post-war practicality and emerging mid-century style all woven together.
The formal lounge is the showpiece. Elaborate ceiling plasterwork radiates outward in geometric, sunbeam-like forms, while polished timber architraves, skirtings, doors and picture rails frame an expansive tapestry-brick fireplace. An amber-toned mirror and crystal chandelier add another layer of period theatre.
And then there is the carpet.
A riot of oversized florals in remarkably pristine condition, it is the kind of detail mid-century lovers may go slightly gaga for. Paired with dual-aspect corner picture windows and streaming light, the room feels less dated than beautifully preserved.
Elsewhere, the floorplan tells its own story. A separate dining room sits beside the kitchen, also adaptable as a television nook or sitting room, and the original sunroom has evolved into a family room overlooking the garden and hills. These spaces could be reconfigured with ease for modern family life, but there is plenty here worth preserving.
The kitchen retains its period charm with diner-style bench seating and a slow-combustion wood-fired stove, while mountain ash floorboards lie beneath the existing carpet and linoleum, waiting to be revealed if desired.
Three generous double bedrooms, a family bathroom with bath plus a shower in the laundry, gas wall heating, reverse-cycle air conditioning and gas hot water add practical comfort.
Outside, decades of planting have created a mature garden rich with blue spruces, Douglas firs, Indian cedar, camellias, rhododendrons, tree ferns, roses, magnolias, hydrangeas, Japanese maples and weeping cherries. Paved paths weave between stone-edged beds, while wrought-iron gates and the entry porch reinforce the home’s period charm.
Two separate driveways, substantial 4-car garaging, workshop space, a double carport and woodshed complete a property that offers something increasingly rare: the chance to honour the past, preserve what matters and shape a new family story within a home already full of them.
