Some properties offer more space. Others offer an entirely different way of life.
Perched amongst the rolling green hills of Mardan, just an easy 10-minute drive from Leongatha, 145 Kuhnes Road is a genuine country retreat where the nearest neighbours feel a world away, every window captures another spectacular rural view and there is enough room for the whole family to spread out and simply enjoy being together.
Set on approximately 1.27 hectares (3.14 acres), the beautiful timber country residence was craftsman-built as a true family home. In fact, six children were once raised here, growing up with animals, chickens, fresh country air and acres of space to explore. That sense of freedom and family remains at the heart of the property today.
With an extraordinary seven genuine bedrooms, this is a home that doesn't just accommodate a large family, it was designed around one. The ground floor provides four bedrooms, all with built-in robes, alongside generous living spaces that make everyday family life remarkably easy. A modern kitchen with stainless steel appliances and a large central island opens directly to the enormous dining area, creating a natural gathering place at the centre of the home. A substantial separate lounge provides another place to retreat, while even the central foyer offers an unexpected amount of additional space.
Upstairs, the scale continues with a spacious master suite featuring a walk-in robe and ensuite, another two bedrooms with built-in robes and a cosy study nook or sitting area. Both the ensuite and family bathroom are modern and functional, while the home has recently been repainted throughout and finished with brand-new flooring, leaving it fresh, comfortable and ready to enjoy.
But no matter where you are inside, your attention inevitably returns to what's outside. The elevated position captures breathtaking, uninterrupted views in seemingly every direction. Windows frame the surrounding countryside like pictures, while the wraparound country verandah provides the perfect vantage point to sit with a morning coffee, watch the changing seasons or simply enjoy the kind of peace and quiet that's becoming increasingly difficult to find.
And there's plenty more beyond the house. A huge American-style timber barn provides an incredible amount of storage, with a separate loft area complete with power, running water and even a phone line. It's an ideal teenager's retreat, games room, hobby space or somewhere to escape for a few hours. A second Colorbond shed provides further storage, while secure fencing makes the property suitable for horses, cattle and other animals.
The remainder of the land is refreshingly uncomplicated. With South Gippsland's fertile soil beneath your feet, there's room to create the country lifestyle you've always pictured: establish a productive veggie garden, plant an orchard, keep chickens, graze a few animals or simply leave the approximately three acres open and enjoy the lush green surrounds.
For a large family, it's an opportunity to give the kids something increasingly rare: space, freedom and a childhood spent outdoors. For those escaping Melbourne, it could just as easily become an incredible country retreat with seven bedrooms providing room for extended family and friends to come together without ever feeling on top of one another.
Despite the feeling of complete seclusion, Leongatha is only around ten minutes away, keeping schools, shopping, cafés, medical services and everyday necessities comfortably within reach.
There are properties that impress you on paper, and then there are properties you need to stand in to understand. 145 Kuhnes Road is the latter. The scale of the home, the silence, the clean country air and those seemingly endless South Gippsland views combine to create a place that feels genuinely special.
Come for the seven bedrooms and three acres. Chances are, it'll be the feeling of being here that makes you want to stay.
