This thoughtfully renovated and extended four-bed room home exudes a natural and harmonious grace, connecting to its heavenly garden while perfectly balancing the old with the new. Think of it not simply as a home but a whole lifestyle, one that combines the buzz of inner-city living alongside a fabulous connection to nature and a sense privacy.
No. 36 Mackennal Street wears the low-slung grace of the iconic Canberra ex-govie, with crisp red brick, clean lines, an immaculate front garden, and sweeping circular driveway. There’s a touch of modernity too, with black-framed double glazed windows complementing and bringing to life the Canberra reds.
A clever re-jig and extension have created a home that feels open and adaptable while retaining its heritage character. Cork and timber floors flow underfoot, walls and cabinets glow white, and the double glazing keeps things quiet and temperate. The use of recycled timber gifts warmth and creates open shelving for artistic display. The social hub combines living, dining, and cooking, spilling out onto a broad deck sheltered by a mature grapevine draped across the pergola with views of Mt Ainslie in the distance.
The kitchen is all charm, arranged in a galley style with clever storage, timber worktops, stainless steel tap ware and appliances along with a beautifully tactile tiled splash back. A glass door adds to the transparent, open vibe and allows you to step outside to the deck, where the sheltered elevation offers lovely views across the native garden.
The floor plan feels contemporary and dynamic, easily morphing to accommodate changing family needs over the years. A wall of windows welcomes a wash of northern light into the living room and master bedroom, while across the landing, the second bedroom serves as a home office with a floating desk and ample storage. Another two bedrooms sit on the other side of the home and are close to the renovated family bathroom. A second bathroom is tucked neatly alongside the stylish laundry.
Designed around a sequence of curves, the back garden is part refuge, part gathering place, part productive oasis. Native plants swirl around the circular fire pit, a screening of mature trees screen the neat rows of productive vegetable beds. Handcrafted seating and artful timber gestures add points of interest, while a generous potting shed and greenhouse make growing a pleasure. The original Canberra red brick garage has been transformed into a workshop, complete with ample built in shelving and cupboard space.
Mackennal is one of those dreamy inner-north streets dotted with mature oak trees that form a shady canopy in summer. The cooling embrace makes it a pleasure to stroll to the local park even on the hottest of days. Dog walkers regularly pause for a chat, and there is always wonderfully supportive neighbourly spirit.
The home is just a short stroll from Lyneham shops, Next Gen Gym, schools and ovals. Local favs include – the iconic Tilley’s Divine Café and The Old Canberra Inn. The central locale connects you close to the independent eateries and bars of O’Connor shops, as well as Braddon and Dickson precincts. Abundant green spaces, shared walking and cycling paths, wetlands, and beautiful tree lines streets create a tranquil village atmosphere, all just a stone’s throw from the CBD and ANU.
