Built in the 1880s for the King family and Gympie's first Gold Commissioner, this distinguished Queenslander once stood on King Street in the heart of the gold rush town. Today, carefully relocated and lovingly restored, it rests on an elevated allotment above Hideaway Bay, commanding a north-easterly outlook across Shoal Bay to Rattray Reef and the islands beyond.
The home's presence is felt from the first approach. A broad front verandah dressed in traditional fretwork brackets leads to a front door framed in original leadlight, opening onto a central hallway and interiors of rare integrity. Polished Gympie hardwood floors, VJ walls with picture rails, lofty ceilings, and ornate fretwork fanlights speak to the craftsmanship of another era, while two original timber fireplace mantels add warmth and quiet grandeur.
Offering 215m² under roof on a single level, the layout follows the classic Queenslander plan with a thoughtful flow for modern life. A separate living room provides a quiet retreat, while the spacious dining room opens to the renovated kitchen, where crisp white cabinetry and subway tiling sit beneath a heritage timber sash window, its coloured side panes framing an uninterrupted ocean and island view.
The main bedroom occupies its own wing, with a walk-in robe and a generous ensuite featuring a walk-in shower and patterned encaustic-style tiling. A second renovated bathroom serves the remainder of the home. Three further bedrooms, including a breezy louvred sleepout and a light-filled room beneath a raked ceiling with glimpses of the sea, offer flexibility for family and guests.
At the heart of the home is the north-facing enclosed verandah, a gracious 24m² space for dining and relaxing, open to the sea breeze and the ever-changing colours of the bay. Here, the home's history and setting meet most beautifully.
The high-set design provides extensive undercover parking and storage below, with ample room for vehicles, a boat, and water-sport equipment. The grounds feature thoughtfully landscaped sandstone rock gardens, a generous lawn, and rainwater tanks, all set against a backdrop of natural bushland. Elevated and positioned to capture views that cannot be built out, the outlook is assured for generations to come.
